Weekend Writing Warriors July 27

Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly blog hop where participants post up to eight sentences of their writing. You can find out more about it by clicking on the image below.

Shayla, codename "Shark", has rendezvoused in the forest with two members of a terrorist cell, Cobra and Tiger. We now meet the final member of the party...

=====

A shrunken figure, swathed in a grubby, threadbare cloak, stood to greet them.

"Eating again, Weasel?" Cobra said with a laugh.

Uneven teeth flashed through straggly whiskers. Shayla realized there was a faint smell of cooking hanging in the air, reminding her stomach how little food it had seen recently. Her pack held a small supply of concentrated rations, enough for minimal sustenance, woefully inadequate for a body stressed by long hours of hard slog.

"Shark, meet Weasel," said Cobra. "He doesn't say much, but he is very useful to have around."

=====

If you enjoy these snippets and would like to read them properly in context, they are all from early chapters which can be sampled for free on most of the online stores listed in the sidebar.

Wow! Very compelling prose. You've certainly got my attention. Love the code names of the characters.

Wow, great description and prose! Good character development again. Can't wait to see more :)

Anna, the code names seem to be popular. People have commented on them before these past few weeks.

Victoria, thanks. Weasel is one of my favorite characters.

That Weasel...he's a tricky one. It's so hard not to comment spoilers. ;-) Such a good book!

Fantastic description. :)

Nicely detailed scene. I love the descriptions, nicely done!

Teresa, yes, no spoilers please, but he does hide a few surprises, doesn't he?

Heather, Steven, thanks!

Wonderful imagery. I like the code names. I'm assuming they kind of fit their persona, yes?

Your excerpts are easy to follow and I can always get a clear picture of what everybody's doing. I'm super curious about Weasel - he reminds me of Yoda. Yours is at the top of my "books I better read" list!

Great visuals. Like Marcia I am curious about Weasel. Great snippet.

Putting this on my TBR list. I always look forward to these snippets!

I love the way he makes Shark feel hungry.

Weasel, huh? He's got a much less cool name--and a less cool look, too. I wonder what makes him useful... it could be so many things!

Veronica Scott said...

I like the detail about the smell of food and her hunger. Really an excellent excerpt!

Botanist said...

Karen, the names are kinda indicative but not too closely.

Marcia, maybe Yoda's sly and slightly evil sibling?

Tina, glad to have piqued your interest.

Millie, that's good to know, thanks.

Sue Ann, food will be a recurring theme with Weasel :)

Caitlin, he has his uses...

Veronica, thanks.

Another very interesting character. You do a great job of painting him with a few clear strokes. I'm really enjoying your excerpts.

Elaine Cantrell said...

I wonder if the names are indicative of their behavior. Interesting excerpt.

Cara Bristol said...

Well crafted scene. I like it.

Botanist said...

Alexis, this story is populated by characters that I absolutely love!

Elaine, I think there's a subliminal indication. Weasel is certainly sly and cunning as becomes clear later on.

Cara, thank you.

Love your new header (I see it is your cover art). The little snippets of story have certainly got my attention :)

Hey Ian,

This snippet you shared comes across that you have a special bond with your characters. I like that very much, good sir.

Gary :)

Botanist said...

Michelle, thanks.

Mynx, well spotted, yes it's a detail from the cover art.

Gary, if we don't have a bond with our characters, even the nasty ones, we can't write about them very well.

I noticed your blog header too. It is wonderful. And so is your snippet. What a good idea to give readers a squiz at your writing style.

Hi Ian .. I see Alexis describes your writing as "painting him with a few clear strokes" ... the fine art of providing enough, but not overloading the descriptive facets ..

I have to say I thought he was eating Weasel and coming from Cobra .. that could be a nasty truth .. but then I re-read the snippet properly .. and it's so well done ..

As Denise mentions - the blog header is pretty special .. good news all is slotting into place for you - cheers Hilary

That's about how I feel right now--inadequate nutrition for so many hours of hard slog. =) Love that description.

Descriptive (yet tight and clean) writing! Loved this!

Denise, I love these weekend slots, and it's great seeing what other writers are up to as well.

Hilary, a fine art indeed, which I am still trying to master. Glad you like the artwork in the header.

Crystal, that's how I feel most days at the moment :)

Jennifer, thanks, and good to hear from you again!
