Weekend Writing Warriors July 20

Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly blog hop where participants post up to eight sentences of their writing. You can find out more about it by clicking on the image below.

Shayla, codename "Shark", has met Cobra and noticed he was keeping a line of sight clear between her and the side of the forest clearing. She challenged the hidden observer to come out...

=====

The bushes hesitated, then rustled. A woman emerged, scowling. "You're late!" Her hand rested on a holstered pistol. Small, precision beam weapon. Deadly in the hands of an expert, but it took an expert to use it properly.

Shayla bowed low. "Shark, at your service."

=====

If you enjoy these snippets and would like to read them properly in context, they are all from early chapters which can be sampled for free on most of the online stores listed in the sidebar.

Intriguing, Ian. Shark at your service reminds me of my wife during our divorce. Yikes.

Nice one, eh. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, good sir.

Well that seems to be a definite twist. Did Cobra think the woman in the woods was on his side?

Teresa Cypher said...

Haha! The first comment made me chuckle.

I like the code names you gave them, Ian. Well, you know, I like the entire book!

Good 8. :-)

Gary, sorry to have brought back such memories. However, it's true that Shayla is not someone you want to run into in a dark alley - as she proves later on in the story ;)

Chelle, Such brief snippets can be confusing. I think the subsequent sentences would make things clearer. Will likely post them next week.

Teresa, Gary always has amusing things to say. So glad you enjoyed the book.

So is she thinking that woman is no expert with the weapon?

Karen Michelle Nutt said...

I'm definitely intrigued. I'm assuming the woman is an expert with her weapon of choice. :)

Yeah, I'm thinking she's an expert. I like how she comes out of the bushes all defensive like, and that Shayla is completely composed. Another great snippet.

Botanist said...

Millie, I think she's weighing the evidence...

Karen, that remains to be seen :)

Alexis, I suspect you'd be a bit peeved if you thought you were safely hidden but you were spotted anyway.

And I'm betting she's quite deadly herself. I like her introduction.

She sounds like quite an operative.

Cara Bristol said...

Interesting...you've got me wondering if she's expert enough to use that weapon.

I liked the 'You're late!' comment and how she responds at the end. Shark is a nifty code name. Good 8!

Shayla doesn't seem to threatened by the weapon. I wonder if she can tell the other person isn't an expert?

I like how much you were able to establish the characters in so few words. Great snippet! :)

Elaine, Sue Ann, Cara - that remains to be seen :)

Frank, nothing like coming straight to the point.

Caitlin, she's extremely confident in her own abilities. Sometimes too much so...

Victoria, thanks.

I like how the bushes hesitated. Some fun writing here. There is tension, but also humor. Nice.

Veronica Scott said...

Interesting snippet. I'm impressed with the detail that led Shayla to know there was someone lurking. Great 8!

Botanist said...

Shell, glad you could see what I was trying for here. I remember critiquers picking this apart..."How can bushes hesitate?"...way too literal.

Veronica, in Shayla's work, attention to detail can mean the difference between life and death.

Denise Covey said...

Wow, Ian. Love the tension here. Poor Gary. I hope he was joking.

Botanist said...

Thanks, Denise, I hope so too...

Great tension! You're keeping us all on tenterhooks;).

Great little snippet. It makes me want to know what happens next.

Crystal Collier said...

Ooh! Shark. That's an epic nickname.

Chrys Fey said...

Shark . . . I love the name of your characters!

Glad to hear it, Tina :)

Lynda, thanks.

Crystal, I kinda liked it, too. Wait till you meet the next member of the gang ;)

Chrys, several critiquers commented on my character names. Not so much these code names, but some of the real names we meet later on.
