Another good reason not to get a boat

The campground at Pacific Playgrounds is right next to a marina and boat launch.

We returned from an outing one day to find this little drama unfolding at the boat launch...

Can you see what it is yet?

The car was only two months old.

Thankfully, no-one was hurt in this incident.

Oh wow!

That wasn't *your* car was it, Ian?

And I hope you had an excellent vacay regardless!

LOL David! No, that was not our car thank goodness!

Holy cow! Those pictures were amazing. And it's so fortunate that no one was hurt. Does a car get totalled when something like that happens?

I truly hope the owner emotionally recovered from the loss. I know I would have lost my mind. In my part of the world a car is a very expensive possession.

Donna, apparently (according to people who've seen this happen before) a dunk in a lake can be salvageable, but this is salt water...and the engine was running when it went in. Yep. Write off.

Unikorna, we all felt sorry for the owner. She was upset, obviously, and she wasn't even driving it at the time. We are just hoping her insurance will cover it.

Hi Lola, and thanks!

Ellie, that annoying Harry Enfield character comes to mind (you're a Brit so there's a chance you'll know what I'm talking about)...Now I do not think you wanted to do that!

A picture is worth a thousand words, aye? And a series gives a whole gamut of emotions! Nice pics.

So true, Danette. I reckoned the pics could pretty much speak for themselves.

Pictures do speak a thousand words but - how on Earth did it happen?

OMG. So it looks like the boat was rearing to go and took the car with it. Boats are still fun though. :)

Botanist said...

Bazza, nobody we spoke to was entirely sure what happened. Best guess is that the driver got out and didn't put the brake on properly.

Laila, I think you're close there. The car got a bit carried away, didn't it?

YIPE! I've had nightmares of going down in a car like that. :( Glad no one was hurt, poor car.

That's a scary nightmare to have, Elizabeth. Did you ever see a Mythbusters program where they tested ways to escape from a submerged car?

@Ian and Elizabeth:

My day job has me spending quite a bit of time at a major auto manufacturer in Spartanburg, SC whose name consists of three letters, but I am not technically supposed to directly say who it is. :^)

Anyway, I found out that there is a new directive coming out that requires cars electrical systems to remain functional for a certain amount of time after it is completely submerged so that locks and windows can still be operated.

I have no idea how they can even make that happen.

Anyway, thought I would share. It looks like in a few years you can just roll down the window and hop / swim out!

Andrew, that's good to know. It might also explain why this car's wipers came on when it submerged :)

Definitely a good idea re. locks, but that Mythbusters experiment proved that it's impossible to open the window of a submerged car until the pressure has equalised, and I don't think you'd have any luck with the door. It's better to get the window or door open and get out before the water gets too high.
