Take a bow...

Bow section finally finished, and I'm pleased with how it finally shaped up. I've been worrying about that part for ages, with planks going at all sorts of funny angles, but it was remarkably easy in the end.

You can also see the planking starting to extend down to the stern, and the rope ladder up to the crows nest.

Nicely done! But... why didn't you paint it :)

Thanks all!

Gary...what the heck time was it it Blighty when you commented? Must be the middle of the night there!

Lettucehead, it absolutely never occurred to me to paint it. There's something magical about the look of wood, especially how it changes colour as it weathers. There will be a splash of colour to come, though, when I get around to finishing touches.

Stella, nice to see you again. Hope you're managing to find some free time amongst that intensive studying.

OMG did you build that by yourself???? It's friggin fantastic! But no don't paint it-I dig the way the wood looks on it's own-it makes it seem more authentic somehow...I am utterly blown away and also pretty jealous that I didn't have a pirate ship when I was a kid.

When I rule the world, Sam, my first decree will be that henceforth all kids shall have a pirate ship ;-)

Yes, I did build it (am still building it - not quite finished yet). If you follow the "Pirate ship" label in the right hand side bar there are lots of pics of progress through the summer.

And you can always get a closer look by clicking on the pictures.

That is really cool! Such patience - and talent! You should've seen me trying to fix my porch railing.

Thanks Jean & Alex. The kids are pretty pleased with it too!

Alex, take heart, there's very little finesse involved here. I suspect a porch railing might actually pose more of a challenge, as that needs some precision :D

Holy Pirate! This is absolutely amazing! Why I never got anything this fantastic when I was younger...I'll never know. Sigh.

I'm going to follow the tabs (Like you suggested to another blogger) and work backwards on this. I want details. You're kids must be ecstatic.

Via your comment on my blog: I do like surprises. I wasn't trying to imply that I don't but there's a difference between say, knowing someone is lying to you and playing along and telling the reader later then being like... hey! I'm a vampire, my parents are vampires and all the popular kids at school are vampires. It's worse cause it was in first person... I don't know I was really disgusted. That being said, I love when we're given clues and are allowed a chance to figure stuff out on our own. It depends how it's done, like everything in writing.

Hello Melissa. Browse away!

And, yes, I got what you were saying and I totally agree. Surprises are good, but the best ones are those that leave you wondering why you didn't spot it earlier. Not those that make you think "where the heck did that come from?"
