Way to make me feel old!

It's come to my notice that much of the civilized world is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who.

That brought back fond memories...

Then a pause for thought...

Then the realization...

50 years? But...but...I remember those early days.

I was one of those kids hiding behind the couch when the Daleks first glided onto the screen. They were bloody terrifying! They must have traumatized a whole generation, because I remember them!

OK, I can't have been too traumatized, because I also remember that I spent many long hours happily drawing them.

Who are you calling "old", punk?

Hi Ian,

Good grief, just realised it has been some time since I visited your blog. Sorry about that. So here I am rectifying the situation at three in the morning!

I have friends who remember the original series way back when it was in black and white. A couple of them have told me they don't watch in now because they think it has become too farcical.

No fear of Daleks, now, right? Dr. Poo is floating about in the Turdis. Ignore me, after all, I'm typing at three in the morning, eh. Oh and nice drawing....

Hello Gary! Wow, I've been remiss in visiting too! I've no idea what's been going on in your neck o'the woods recently. Off to rectify forthwith...

Yes, I used to be an avid fan of Dr Who through the 60's and 70's. Not so much after that.

I actually think this is so cool that you've been watching Doctor Who for that long, Ian. Wow!

I never saw anything Doctor related until well into the current run/new series. I think it was back in 2011 when I decided to catch up with all the episodes on Netflix, starting from Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor on up to the current Matt Smith's Twelfth.

And I hate to say it, but the Daleks are my least favorite element of this show. Ugh! I'm so sick of seeing them show up, too. Enough already!

Still, some of these episodes are amazing. "Blink" in particular, where the Weeping Angels are introduced, was brilliant! Perhaps the best hour of sci-fi television I've ever seen. And that was with David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, considered by many to be the best incarnation to date.

LOL, Valerie, not sure how hiding behind the couch counts as heroic. Mind you, I was only 3 at the time :)

David, I don't think the Daleks today could ever have the same impact as they did back then. 50 years ago, they were truly ground-breaking villains. Nobody had ever seen anything like that before, so it made a huge impression. In fact, despite all the other baddies the Doctor battled with back then, they were synonymous with Dr Who. I even remember the series as a whole often being referred to as "Dr Who and the Daleks" even when the Daleks were nowhere in sight.

Hahaha time flies, doesn't it?

It's funny the things that make us feel old. At least you are cool enough to remember the old Dr. Who, and didn't hop on the bandwagon with the newer shows :)

Misha, it does indeed, frighteningly so!

Shell, yeah, it's strange the things us oldies can say "I remember that from first time around". Sometimes cool, sometimes not so :)

LOL! Pickleope, that's what I'm talking about. Or maybe "Ex-tuhhhh...huhhhh *wheeze* *cough* *hack*...minate."
