In an effort to keep myself honest and true, I'm laying bare a few numbers. Maybe the fact that they're out there on the Interwebs for all to see - yes, both of you - will help hold me to my targets.
Current | Target | |
Word count | 98,800 | Not to exceed 100,000 |
Critiqued | 73% | 100% by end of November |
Revised | 14% | 50% by end of December |
Critiqued = put through the Critique Circle queue and feedback received.
Revised = feedback analysed and relevant chapters revised accordingly. This does not include rounds of beginning-to-end reading.
There. I've said it. May small wriggly things infest my breakfast cereal if I fail to hold true to my course.

Nice work, Ian! I'm wishing you all the luck in keeping to your projections.
Botanist, how many rounds of critique do you submit your manuscript through? And does it ever come to a point where you say enough is enough it's not going to get any better. Does it ever feel like critique partners are trying to change to much of your work? I'm starting the critiquing process and you seem to be a pro at it so thought I'd ask. :)
That's a pretty tight word count limit. 1200 words max and you're only at 14% revised? That would make me nervous.
I'm curious how many passes you make through CC as well. I think that the current public queue pass of the first five, and all subsequent chapters in the private queue will represent my final run through. I did the same thing earlier, with the first five public and the rest of the story in the private. I guess we'll see how it turns out.
Best of luck in your efforts! We'll all be watching now to see if you stick to it.

I'm sending you good luck thoughts. Thanks again for providing me enough knowledge to make my own tabs. :)
Thanks David. We'll see how I manage to do!
Laila - several, not yet, yes! I think a useful answer to your questions would take more space than I can put into comments. I feel a follow-up post coming on, so watch this space, but please take anything I say with caution because I'm certainly not a pro! :D
Andrew, my aim with this round is to trim out more than I add in, so I'm hopeful about the word count.
You're welcome Lindsey. Your tabs look great! Mine aren't proper tabs at all, just boring old links tarted up a bit. When I let Blogger do its thing the text wouldn't show up against the background so I ended up having to fudge them with my own (rather crude) HTML. Yours are way better.
Wow, I wish I could figure out how to write in fewer words O:)
I'm at the second draft now - the third one will be the final - and with minor improvements from the 2nd (well, so far, at least). I'm revising at... 0% (ooops) and crit at... I don't know - no one passed chapter 10, so I guess it's under 50% :S
Thanks Botanist. I'll keep checking your post. You might not be a pro as you say, but all your info is useful and much appreciated. :)
That's awesome. Critiques can give us much to think upon. Just don't lose site of what YOU want for your tale.
Good luck with keeping to your goal! No one likes wriggly things in their cereal.
Hi Steph, regarding your critiques, does that mean you're using a private queue then? I've been looking out for more chapters from you but haven't seen anything since July.
Laila, I will post something soon. Promise :)
Donna, that is so true!
Jean, that is my motivation :D
I bet you will keep to it... much of it is having the "vision", another big part is committing it to words, which make the third part of "doing" all that much easier.
Best of luck to you...
Saloma
I will certainly do my best, Saloma. Thanks for the good wishes.
Sweet blogger friend you don't need to be surrounded by numbers but by muses.
Great goals, simple and quantified ;) I've recently realized I need to set some goals for myself too. (Though there's something about deadlines and quotas that makes me very nervous.) Good luck with reaching yours!
Unikorna, that's a wonderful thought. Sadly, numbers are important at the business end of the coal face, but muses most certainly keep me sane.
Hello Vanna, I am usually nervous about goals too. I'm not a big risk-taker so this is a big leap for me.
