Weekend Writing Warriors December 2

http://www.wewriwa.com/

Weekend Writing Warriors is a weekly blog hop where participants post eight to ten sentences of their writing. You can find out more about it by clicking on the image.

Continuing a chapter from Ghosts of Innocence, Shayla is on her tortuous path into the Palace under cover. She has stolen the identity of a new Palace appointee, Brynwyn bin Covin. The previous snippet ended: It looked like Brynwyn had intended to make a dramatic exit after the anonymity of her Meditation.

=====

She must have been proud of her new position.

The thought left Shayla with a bitter taste, but she would have to play the part to the full. She took a few minutes to clear her mind and review her notes. The facts had long ago been committed to memory and rehearsed endlessly. But the time had now come for more than mere recollection.

She had to become Brynwyn bin Covin.

She took another deep breath and finished packing Brynwyn's belongings. During the night, Shayla had unpacked everything in the small pile of trunks in the room, familiarizing herself with every item.

This was her life now. For a short while, at least.

Hi Ian! It's nearly Toblerone Cheesecake eating time again!
Love the tension in this, especially the last line. What's next?

She sounds very prepared for this mission. I wonder what obstacles she'll encounter on this mission.

Denise, you remembered! :) It's been a while since I made it, but that cheesecake is definitely calling.

Jessica, she is very well prepared, but it ends up taking a turn she never anticipated.

Of COURSE this mission takes a turns she hadn't anticipated. I'd expect no less of you, Ian!

Gotta keep the readers guessing with those twists and turns.

A major problem happening. Fine frightening snippet

She's so well prepared and efficient here. I feel sorry for the person whose identity she's stolen, seems a sif that person may have met a sad end? Really enjoying the story though, great snippet!

Ed, there will be many unexpected turns, some worse than others :)

Diane, you got it!

Charmaine, at this point at least, she feels she's in control ...

Veronica, unfortunately you're right. The previous chapter hinted at that, but the sad end happened off stage.

She's prepared but I'm sure it will not be all that easy going.

Karen, you got that right!

Sounds like she's well prepared to pull off her identity switch. I can't see that going wrong at all. :)

Great snippet! It's short in length, but long on information and adding new intrigue. In other words, you make your readers want more.

Toblerone cheesecake...? Hmmm.

When I was younger, I fancied myself a bit of an actress. At this juncture, I'm afraid I'm too impatient and it would be obvious that I was none other than my usual curmudgeonly self, no matter how good the disguise!
Thank you for visiting us at Naughty Netherworld Press

I've read books where characters take the cover of others and it's nerve wracking because I don't know if they'll get caught. A great hook indeed! :D

Botanist said...

Jean, that's right, nothing to see here... :)

Susan, yes, Toblerone cheesecake, although any chocolate will do.

Cara, I'm no good at acting either, so I guess I live vicariously through Shayla.

Elizabeth, there's lots of nerve-wracking suspense for Shayla along the way!

I've being going mad trying to find the recipe. I could have sworn I'd posted it to my blog at some point, but seems like not.

This recipe here is basically it, although I know I tweak it slightly, e.g. by adding more cream:
Toblerone cheesecake
